Now this album is a ride! If you are looking for a fun concept album, something combining a bit of futuristic, some good dark rock vibes, Shooter Jenning’s voice and some great lyrics, not to mention Stephen King to top it off – you will love this album.
It was a stretch the first time for me, hearing Shooter Jennings with the backing music, but it didn’t take long for this to become one of my favorites.
The concept is that you are listing to disc jockey Will O the Whisp (played by Stephen King) as he airs his last night/last broadcast before the government shuts the station down. So as a final finger to the air, he plays songs by the fictional band Hierophant (which Shooter is the singer for). In essence, you are listening to someone’s last show on free radio, and of course, I can’t tell you how it ends. You just have to listen.
Now, do be aware, there were multiple releases of this album. The first release was in 2010, and did include Stephen King’s portions. Another release came in 2011 which removed those, and just had the music. Then, in 2016 a deluxe version was released (in time for the election of course). Shooter was quoted in an interview saying that it was the perfect time for that release, as the election had pretty much separated the country, and it felt like good ol’ big brother was going to have to step in and tell us how to live. Both the 2010 and 2016 releases have Stephen King’s portions. And I have to say, it just wouldn’t be the same without those.
